life as a mental projector
Being a Mental Projector in the homogenized world is no walk in the park.
Ra Uru Hu, the receiver of Human Design, doesn’t mince words when describing the challenges this special subtype faces.
“I hate making these types of statements… but it is not an easy thing to be a Mental Projector.”*
Mental Projectors are bestowed with a fixed mind, rooted in a robust mental base. Living in a conditioned world where the mind reigns supreme, they can easily compete on the mental plane.
Yet, this unique configuration presents a paradox — there is no inner authority. It’s a design devoid of reliable anchors, leaving Mental Projectors grappling with the complexities of decision-making, unlike most other types.
While Reflectors have even less definition — none at all, actually — their openness doesn’t operate the same as all other types. Their auras are Teflon strong. They’re also still able to find clarity with their authority. They are lunar beings while all others are solar. They wait for their cycle to complete and that’s that. Their strategy = their authority. Simple.
On the flip side, the Mental Projector faces a conundrum.
Every Projector must wait for the invitation as their strategy, but for the Mental Projector, the authority can be difficult to find. There is no source of it in the body, like a Splenic or Emotional Projector. There is NO Inner authority at all. The Mental Projector has what’s commonly called “outer,” “environmental,” and “no” authority.
This is — in my experience — the most difficult part of its design.
using your inner authority
To find clarity, the Mental Projector must first be invited and then enter an experiential process before committing to anything. It could take hours or days, but this process must be honored to make aligned decisions. During this time, the Mental Projector engages in a unique practice of discussing the offer with themselves and/or multiple trusted loved ones.
When discussing with others, the emphasis must be on “soundboarding” with another individual, not on acquiring advice from them. Mental Projectors have strong mental faculties and do not need to ask around for advice, rather they need to hear their own voice when discussing the topic with others. By integrating with another’s aura, the lower area of the design is activated and the true value of the decision at hand is discerned clearly.
tips for honoring your unique authority
- When you are ready to soundboard, make sure you’re in a comfortable environment; one your body feels good in.
- Call up a friend or trusted confidant that is emotionally intelligent and ask them if they can do something for you. This is you inviting them.
- Make it clear that you’re reaching out because you know they’re a great listener and you trust them to discuss important matters with. This is you recognizing them — a Projector’s gift.
- Let them know that they can help guide the conversation, asking questions while listening intently, but remind them that you are not going to be asking for advice; tell them that you need someone who is mindfully aware that can be there to help you navigate your process. If, for whatever reason, they are not able to discuss the topic with another, the Mental Projector can talk smaller invitations out with themselves by speaking out loud (recording oneself and listening back can be very beneficial). The truth is discerned by listening to one’s own voice in the correct environment, observing how it vibrates in the body.
closing thoughts
The dilemma for the Mental Projector lies in the elusive nature of authority. It’s not a straightforward concept but rather a nuanced, questionable aspect of their existence. For this reason, many Mental Projectors experience their authority differently. I’ve personally found connecting with other MPs online extremely helpful to my own experiment.

In essence, being a Mental Projector is an ongoing exploration, an intricate dance with the mind. If you are a Mental Projector like me, your journey will involve navigating the maze of interactions and experiences to arrive at a conclusion that aligns with your unique design. It will seem confusing at first, but it does get easier, so long as you always follow your strategy and experiment with your authority.
